Safety in the Sun

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

In the warm summer months, we know lots of people are going to be out enjoying the nice weather outside. From grilling outdoors to just laying in the sun and soaking up rays, it’s always important to emphasize safety and awareness, and The Crossing Apartments want you to be safe while having fun.  No matter what you decide to do, here are a few tips to do just that:

Barbecue Safety

  • Before using a gas grill, check the connection between the propane tank and the fuel line. Follow Manufactures instructions for lighting
  • Do not wear loose clothing while cooking at a barbecue.
  • Be careful when using lighter fluid. Do not add fluid to an already lit fire because the flame can flashback up into the container and explode.
  • Use long handled grilling tools for safer grilling.
  • Dispose of hot coals properly – douse them with plenty of water, and stir them to ensure that the fire is out. Never place them in plastic, paper or wooden containers.
  • Never grill/barbecue in enclosed areas – carbon monoxide could be produced.

Campfire Safety

  • Build campfires where they will not spread, away from dry grass and leaves.
  • Keep campfires small, and don’t let them get out of hand.
  • Keep plenty of water and a shovel around to douse the fire when you’re done. Stir it and douse it again with water.
  • Never leave campfires unattended.
  • Never build a fire without having the equipment and ability to extinguish it.

Sun Safety

  • Wear sunglasses that block UV rays – Make sure that the labels ensure 100% UV protection.
  • Use Sunscreen Consistantly – Apply every one or two hours to be safe
  • Wear a hat
  • Check Medication -  Some medications increase the skin’s sensitivity to UV rays, this can cause skin to burn easily.

Just remember all these helpful tips, and you’ll be safe in the sun all summer!

What’s New At The Santa Ana Zoo

    Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Located just 15 minutes away from The Crossing Anaheim apartment community is the Santa Ana Zoo in Prentice Park. The Santa Ana Zoo is pleased to announce the birth of a giant anteater. Giant anteaters are found in the tropical forests and grasslands of Central and South America. They are considered vulnerable in the wild due to habitat loss and hunting. this birth has been highly anticipated by Zoo staff.  The baby will ride around on its mother’s back up to 10 months while growing to over half her size. The baby will nurse for approximately six months after that it will eat the specially designed food for insect eating animals. In the wild, anteaters may eat up to 30,000 ants and termites a day.

The Santa Ana Zoo acquired giant anteaters in 2009 from a partner facility in South America with the help of donations from the UC Irvine Alumni Association and the Mike Schroeder Family. This is the first birth of this species at the Santa Ana Zoo and was a collaborative effort of the Species Survival Plan Program through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The mission of the Species Survival Plan Program is to manage and conserve select threatened or endangered species through the cooperation of AZA-accredited Zoos and Aquariums.
