Public Transportation Made Easy

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Here at The Crossing Apartments, we encourage public transportation. Public transportation is now made easy thanks to the OCTA’s open data initiative. This provides free service data to developers to create cool mobile and web applications. Here are a few cool applications designed to help you with your commute whether you are traveling by bus, train or bike.

Get Me There On a Bike – Are you looking to view all the existing bikeways in Orange County? The Orange County Transportation bikeways map gives users a detailed depiction of Orange County’s existing bikeways. It generates bike friendly routes with turn by turn directions from your current location to any address you specify.  You can also create custom routes and save to your phone for future use. Get me there on a bike can be purchased through iTunes.

MyStops – MyStops enables users to check their most frequently-used bus and transit schedules on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Quickly flip through your most recent stops by entering a stop number, locating the nearest stops or searching for the intersection. Mystops can be purchased from the app store.

Dadnab – Use Dadnab to send transit information via text message.  Let others know your departure and arrival time or your exact location.

Railbandit – Railbandit allows you to track train schedules from your smart phone. If you have a GPS feature on your phone, you can track yourself while on the train and find out if your train is on time. Railbandit is available on IPhones, Android, and Blackberry.

Pothole Agent -   Wish you had hindsight for locating potholes? Well now you can. The Pothole Agent application uses your phone’s accelerometer and magnetic field sensors to automatically detect potholes, speed bumps, or impact events as they happen. These events are saved on a map which you can view directly from the phone or email to yourself. You can also email these files to the Department of Transportation.

While all of these applications seem to enhance the traveling experience in Orange County, The Crossings Apartment nor the OCTA endorse the apps listed, we encourage you to read reviews and research the apps that work best for you. Please remember do not text and drive.

Tips for Dealing with Hard Water in Your Apartment

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

We know that our residents here at The Crossing Anaheim have been having some issues with hard water.

hard water

Princeton defines hard water as, “water that contains mineral salts (as calcium and magnesium ions) that limit the formation of lather with soap.”

One tip for your dishwasher is to run a half gallon of vinegar through your dishwasher a couple of times a year.

We offer Delta faucets here at our community. From their handbook, read below to find some tips to use in your own apartment.

How to rinse your kitchen faucet

  • To flush your faucet, remove the aerator and black sealing gasket above it.
  • Turn hot and cold faucet handle(s) to full on
position(s) and flush lines for two minutes before
    turning off water.
  • Replace aerator with black sealing gasket above it.

When you’re cleaning your faucet, don’t use these items:

  • Industrial cleaners
  • Abrasive cleaners
  • Toilet bowl cleaners
  • Bleach-based cleaners
  • Polish
  • Ammonia solutions
  • Heavy-duty scrub sponges
  • Products containing hydrofluoric,
    hydrochloric and/or phosphoric
    acids and caustic agents

How to remove lime and mineral deposits

Place a cloth soaked in white vinegar over the deposits for several hours, then try the mild cleanser.

To clean the aerator:

  • Unscrew the aerator.
  • Remove it and the black sealing gasket above it.
  • Rinse the gasket in clean water.
  • Soak the aerator in a 50/50 vinegar and water solution for several hours.
  • Flush the aerator with water.
  • Rub stubborn deposits with a toothbrush.

Hope these tips help you keep your faucets clean and working here at The Crossing Anaheim. If you have questions, let us know on Facebook, or stop by our office.

When Is The Best Time to Do Yoga?

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Here at The Crossing Anaheim, we have an apartment yoga studio. Have you read our beginner’s guide to yoga yet? We think it’s helpful.

When is the best time for you to practice yoga?

yogaThe best time for yoga is in the morning after a shower and on an empty stomach. This isn’t always possible considering all the things we must do during the day. You can also practice yoga any time of the day, but try not to eat anything heavy 2 to 3 hours prior to your session.

If you can, you should try to do yoga every single day. You can take advantage of our yoga studio here in Anaheim, but really you can do yoga anywhere you want.

Our Apartment Receives Gold Level LEED Status

Monday, December 13th, 2010

The Crossing Anaheim is an eco-friendly apartment community–something you most likely know if you live here. We’re smoke-free, we use dimmer lights and so much more. We could talk about it all day, but we’re happy to report that we’ve received some surprising recognition for being a green community.

Our apartments are now LEED certified and we received a gold level certificate from the United States Green Building Council. Why is this so great? Because we only expected to be recognized at the silver level.

The Crossing Anaheim is healthier for our residents and better for the environment.

The following items were highlighted in our application:Gold LEED certification

  • commuter-friendly location
  • the urban infill / reuse site selection
  • the use of green building materials
  • the 94-percent diversion rate by which 7,952 tons of demolition and construction waste was recycled
  • the donation of excavated sandy soils to the city for improvements made to the nearby Santa Ana River bed
  • policies aimed at promoting better health

We’re very excited about this news, and hope continue with our sustainable efforts.
